It’s that time of the year again!

The month of November is popularly known as Movember or No Shave November. This month is special to the bearded community because it is a time when men are encouraged to grow their moustaches and beards to raise awareness for men’s health issues – mainly – prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health.

Here are some tips for this Movember. Whether you are 22 or 55, this is for you.

  1. Schedule a doctor’s visit (for prostate cancer)

You need to get your prostate checked – this will allow you to know if you have a high chance of getting prostate cancer, based on factors such as family history.
It may be uncomfortable but it is literally a lifesaver – that’s what matters.
2. Check yourself (for testicular cancer)
Unfortunately, testicular cancer is known as one of the most common cancers, especially in young men. The bright side, however, is that it is one of the most treatable cancers if detected early.
Give yourself an exam at least once a month by feeling your testicles for any abnormalities.
Consult a doctor immediately if you feel any foreign bumps or lumps.
3. Talk it out! (for your mental health)
Talk it out!!
It is a sad fact that men’s suicide rates are higher because of the pressures of being a man – one of them being that you must stay ‘strong’ and deal with life as it comes. ‘Be a man about it,’ and all the other dangerous things that are said to men.
You need people. If you have a great group of friends, start there. If that’s not for you, talk to a professional. There is no shame in the struggle, in fact, you are likely to get other men to open up which is doing Movember right!
4. Get active (for your overall health)
One of the easiest ways to avoid these health issues is to exercise. Try and get active for at least 30 minutes, 3 – 6 times a week.
You can take a walk, go for a swim, or hit the gym.
Breaking a sweat is great for your physical, mental, and emotional health.
