If you are an avid reader of this blog, you know that we recommend trimming.
If you are new to this blog, here is a quick explanation of the difference between trimming/cutting and shaving.
Trimming/ cutting: This is the process of reducing the hair. You would most likely use a pair of scissors for this. It is mostly used to cut or reduce excess hair or for styling.
Shaving: This is the process of completely removing your facial hair. In this case, one is likely to use a razor or a pair of electric clippers.
Now that we have these differences clear, let’s talk about trimming.
Why you should do it:
Many people think that trimming slows down hair growth. In reality, trimming gets rid of your split ends, dryness and unhealthy hair which speeds up growth and strengthens your hair as well. The end result is a healthy beard.
How you should do it:
You will need to get the right tools – a beard brush, a beard comb, scissors and a styling agent (beard oil and beard balm).
Before you trim, use your beard brush to brush your hair. This will also make it easier for you to see the split ends that you need to get rid of. You can dab a bit of lukewarm water on your beard to make it easier to brush.
The second step is the scissors. If you decide to do it yourself, use these carefully, in front of a mirror or enlist the help of a partner or friend. Be sure not to lose your beard shape.
Next, rub some beard balm on your beard. Beard balms act as a conditioner and this will leave your beard feeling soft and fresh. Add some beard oil for the extra shine.
All you need to do after this is comb your beard. Remember to comb in a downward manner and follow your beard shape.

Pro tips:
The goal is to trim and shape your beard. Watch out for the cheek bones and neck line. One wrong move could throw off your beard shape entirely.
Your focus will be the neck line and the cheek line –
To find your neck line, place two fingers above your Adams apple, trim your way upwards from this point- any hair below this should be shaved off.
Your cheek line should be mid-ear to your mouth – hair above this point should be shaved off.
Some people prefer to have a lower cheek line which is okay, but be sure not to have it too low as this will not achieve the perfect trim that we are looking for.
If you have been growing out your beard for Movember, the 30 day mark is a good time to trim your beard and continue with your beard growth journey.
