How Mo-bros and Mo-sistas Can Be Supportive

In our previous article we talked about the 3 health areas that Movember focuses on. Today we are going to look at how we can all play a role in improving our health as Mo-bros.

Early cancer detection

During Movember it’s important that all Mo-bros prioritize early cancer detection. Also known as screening, this is where a doctor checks your body for cancer cells. It’s beneficial in the following ways:

  • It finds changes that would otherwise develop into cancer if left unchecked.
  • Identifies cancer early before you show any symptoms.
  • Makes it easier to treat cancer before it spreads or gets worse.
  • Increases chances of survival if cancer is detected.
  • Can potentially reduce both treatment and recovery time.
  • Gives you peace of mind and reassurance if nothing is detected.
  • Can save treatment costs if detected early.

When it comes to testicular cancer, sometimes self-checks are recommended as a first step. On the other hand, when it comes to prostate cancer, men should talk to their doctors at around 50 years of age. However, if you are at a high risk of developing prostate cancer, going for annual screening earlier than the stipulated age is recommended. Some factors that can make men be at a high risk include:
  • Family/ relative history of cancer
  • Being overweight
  • Use of tobacco

Mo-sistas
Mo-sistas are women who participate in Movember without growing beards of course. But they can wear fake beards if they want to. These sistas champion the health of Mo-bros and are always at the forefront leading by example. Here’s how Mo-sistas can help:
  • Fundraise for Movember charity
  • Remind a Mo-bro not to shave
  • Encourage Mo-bros to be active
  • Urge men to participate and join Movember
  • Talk to a Mo-bro or partner if they’re down
  • Remind a Mo-bro of his annual screening

Lending an ear
Another area that Movember revolves around is Mental health. As a friend to someone who is suffering from mental illnesses, one of the best ways you can help is by simply listening. Mental disorders can develop to suicide ideation and we can help prevent that by just listening. When you lend an ear someone is more likely to open up about the challenges they are facing. Therefore, if you notice something odd about someone, do the following as a Mo-bro or sista:
  • Set adequate time aside to talk and hear them out
  • Listen without making judgements or rebukes
  • Provide emotional support and encouragement
  • Ask open ended questions so that they can open up more
  • Try as much as possible to avoid confrontation
  • Do not diagnose their disorder since you are not a professional
  • Encourage them to seek professional help

Eat healthy and work out
It all starts with diet hence the saying “Health is wealth.”
As cliché as that saying might sound, not a day goes by that it ceases to be true. Whether rich or poor, young or old, having good health is something that we all desire in our lifetimes. Health is one of those things which is more valuable and precious than any gem or jewelry on earth. It’s the heartbeat of life itself. Without good health, we can indeed be alive but fail to live life.
Watching what we eat is very important because it impacts our bodies and health in infinite ways. So let’s make it a priority to change what we eat and lean more towards healthy options. Let’s also remember to work out! Being active has the following benefits:
  • Improves our mood and mental health
  • Keeps our weight on check
  • Helps the body manage insulin levels
  • Helps you stop smoking and avoid tobacco
